The Schedule of Ancient Monuments is compiled and maintained by the Secretary of State under Section 1 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. The fact that a monument has been scheduled means that it has been recognised as being of national importance. The primary purpose of scheduling a monument is to preserve it for the future, and to protect it from damage, destruction or any unnecessary interference.
There are 12 scheduled monuments in the Borough:

- Roman Villa 100m north west of Handley Barns (Ingatestone & Fryerning, 24862)
- Barn at Ingatestone Hall (Ingatestone & Fryerning, 47)
- Moated Site 210m east of Brizes (Kelvedon Hatch, 33262)
- Thoby Priory (Mountnessing, 124)
- Moated Site in Fortification Wood (Navestock, 105)
- Moated Site at Watton Farm (Navestock, 29386)
- Old Thorndon Hall and Gardens (Brentwood, 32473)
- Former Parish Church and Churchyard of St. Nicholas (Brentwood, 32471)
