Brentwood Borough’s historic environment is well documented and protected through national designations, with 13 conservation areas and over 500 listed buildings. However, there are many other locally important heritage assets that do not meet the strict criteria for national designation.
A Local List contains elements of the historic environment that are not already designated, but which still contribute to a sense of place, local distinctiveness and have local significance.
These are known as non-designated heritage assets, features which contribute to making a place special for local people. They carry history, traditions, stories and memories into the present day and add depth of meaning to a modern place.

Brentwood's Local Heritage List
Following a consultation for public ‘nominations’ onto the borough's Local Heritage List and a thorough assessment process led by accredited heritage specialists. The Brentwood Local Heritage List was approved by the Council’s Policy, Resources & Economic Development Committee on 3 October 2022.

What does it mean if a building is on the list
The purpose of the Brentwood Local List is to raise awareness of the area’s local heritage assets and their importance to its unique distinctiveness. The list can also inform developers, owners and council officers about buildings and places within the local authority boundary that are desirable to retain and protect.
Being identified on the Local List demonstrates that a building or site makes a positive contribution to the character and local distinctiveness of a place. It does not preclude development, nor does it equate to statutory protection or the requirement for Listed Building Consent.
What does it mean if a building is not on the list
This current and adopted list is the first tranche of assessed buildings; that does not preclude a building or feature being identified as a Non Designated Heritage Asset and the list will be developed 'live' and inline with nominations from the Public and through the Development Management function.
Future updates
The Local Heritage List is a living document that will be open to amendment and future updates. There will be further opportunities to nominate a heritage asset for inclusion on the Local List, details of which will be published in due course.
