On 29-30 June, teams from Brentwood Borough Council and Rochford District Council, alongside teams from across local government, the wider public sector and private sector partners, all took part in the national Three Peaks public sector challenge, in support of Cancer Research UK (CRUK).
The groups climbed the three biggest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon - all within 24 hours! The total walking distance for the challenge was 23 miles and the total ascent was 3064 metres. Despite facing treacherous weather conditions, the dedicated groups rose to the occasion, forming new relationships and raising a remarkable amount of funds for cancer research.
Through the generosity of supporters, the groups managed to collectively raise a grand total of £50,575.75 Plus, an additional £10,066.44 through Gift aid.
Jonathan Stephenson, Joint Chief Executive of Brentwood Borough Council & Rochford District Council, and Founder of the Public Sector Challenge, said, “Throughout the entire journey, our colleagues exemplified the unwavering spirit of solidarity and camaraderie. Their tireless efforts and support for one another demonstrated the power of a united front in tackling such a formidable challenge. Friendships were forged across organisations, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.
“Unfortunately, due to travel times, not everyone was able to complete all 3 peaks, but this should not put down the unwavering determination of our colleagues and the physical and mental achievements they have gained for a noble cause.
“Cancer unfortunately touches so many of us either directly or indirectly through our friends or family members. These funds will significantly contribute to advancing research and treatment options, bringing us one step closer to defeating cancer.”
