Leader's blog - July 2025

You may be aware that the future of local government in Essex is currently under review, including here in Brentwood, where our council is currently navigating local government reorganisation. Ultimately, this means changes to who delivers your services, including the creation of new unitary authorities.

Whilst we did not seek these changes, we are responding to them in the best interests of our community. I want to reassure you that throughout this process, we are working to achieve the best outcome for Brentwood residents, which, in our view, includes options to collaborate with neighbouring councils as part of a network of five unitary authorities across Greater Essex.

There is an opportunity for you to have your say. You can help by telling us which council services are important to you and what you value most about the area you live in. You can help us make the case to keep the local in local government! Please take part in the survey to ensure that the views of Brentwood residents and businesses are known.

Last month, around 10,000 people enjoyed our annual Strawberry Fair at King George’s Playing Fields, which also commemorated the 80th anniversary of VE Day. It is community events like these that make living in our borough truly special.

Next month, we have our Family Fun Days, which are popular family events designed to help take the pressure off parents and grandparents during the school summer holidays, when you're looking for budget-friendly days out to entertain the kids. Here are all the dates and details of our Family Fun Days.

Sadly, we recently learned of the passing of Hutton South councillor Mark Reed, as well as those of former councillors Madeline Henwood and Paul Barrell. As a mark of respect, the borough flag has been lowered to half-mast and there will be a minute's silence at next week’s meeting of Full Council.
