Disabled facilities grants

If you are disabled or an older person and you are finding it difficult to do everyday tasks, you might find that adaptations to your home would make life easier.

You may be eligible to have funding from the Disabled Facilities Grant for any adaptations that we recommend.

The grant is for adaptations such as stair lifts, level access showers, hoists and ramps for people who need them to live at home independently and safely.

Disabled Facilities Grants are means-tested in accordance with Government regulations. We will do a financial assessment with you and this means you may have to pay something towards the adaptations.

How it works

Contact an Occupational Therapist from Essex County Council's Adult Social Care team. (0345 603 7630)

They will assess your needs and see if you need any adaptions. If you need changes to your property the Occupational Therapist will send a recommendation to the Council.

Who can apply

  • Disabled people who are tenants or owner-occupiers. The property must be your only or mail residence.
  • Disabled people who live in a family member's property. The family member must own the property and it has to be your only or main residence.
  • Parents of a disabled child

Am I eligible?

A disabled person is eligible for a grant if they receive any of the following benefits:

  • Housing benefit
  • Guaranteed pension credit
  • Income support
  • Job seekers allowance (income based)
  • Employment and support allowance (Income based)
  • Child tax credit (with a family income below £15,460)
  • Working tax credit (with a family income below £15,460)

If the disabled person is a child or young person under 19 they are eligible for a grant regardless of family income.

If the disabled person does not receive any of the above benefits we will carry out a means test. We will assess their income and savings to work out how much grant they could get and if they will have to pay towards the cost of the works.
