Focus on ......... D of E (Duke of Edinburgh Award)

On Tuesday 20th October, three young people from the open award centre at the Hermit arrived at St James Palace for an audience with HRH Prince Phillip. After four years of dedication and hard work, Ellie Watts, Faye Savory and Lucinda Moore achieved their D of E Gold Award and were presented with their certificates by the author of Captain Correli's Mandolin, Louis de Bernieres.

Focus on........... Hermit Live!

The music venue has long since been established as a cornerstone of culture in the local area. What isn't always recognized is that the venue is a safe environment for young people to meet new friends and see some great live bands. The venue is run by young volunteers and supported by the qualified youth work team to book bands, create publicity and run the non-alcoholic juice bar.

You can check out the music venue at www.myspace.com/brentwoodhermit

Focus on…..NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training)

Due to the effects of the recession, more and more young people are struggling, finding it difficult to find employment.  Statistically, being NEET between the ages of 16–18 is a major predictor of later unemployment, low income, teenage motherhood, depression and poor physical health.

Reducing the proportion of 16- to 18-year-olds not in education, employment or training (NEET) is a key priority . Although Brentwood has a relatively low number of young people who are NEET, it is much higher than in previous years.

If you or someone you know is 16 -19 and is not in education employment or training come in to the Hermit for Information, Advice and Guidance on job and training opportunities that are available to you.

Some good news for our young people who left school this year 97% of Brentwood’s school leavers this summer were offered a place of further learning or training for September; the 3rd highest percentage in Essex.
