Stop Loan Sharks

Stop Loan Sharks LogoBrentwood Borough Council is a Stop Loan Sharks Campaign Partner.

Staff have undertaken training with the England Illegal Money Lending Team

Loan sharks are illegal moneylenders who often charge very high interest rates - check if a company is licensed and how to report one that isn’t.

If you spot a loan shark, or have borrowed money from one, you can report them anonymously

Call 0300 555 2222 for help.

If you've borrowed from a loan shark, you haven't broken the law - they have.

Loan sharks often:

  • Offer you a cash loan but do not give you any paperwork.
  • Don't tell you when you will finish paying.
  • Increase the amount you owe even if you are making regular payments.
  • Threaten or use violence to get money from you.

A loan shark may tell you that if you don't pay up you could be prosecuted, this is not true, an unlicensed lender has no legal right to recover the debt.

You can report a loan shark in confidence to the illegal money lending team. If you have been threatened and are in immediate danger, contact the police.
