The Council is required to undertake a Sustainability Appraisal (SA) for certain planning policy documents, such as Development Plan Documents (DPD) and Supplementary Planning Documents (SPD). This ensures that policies and proposals contribute to the objectives of sustainable development.
Local Development Plan SA
The SA process is undertaken in parallel with and informs successive stages of Local Plan production.
One of the first stages in the SA process is the need to consider the scope of the sustainability appraisal. The Brentwood Local Plan Scoping Report was available for public comment for five weeks ending Friday 5 July 2013.
An Interim SA Report was produced to inform the Council's Local Plan 'Preferred Options' consultation and subsequent preparation of the draft 'Proposed Submission' plan. This Interim SA Report presents an appraisal of options for a range of policy areas and issues. It was available for public comment for six weeks ending Friday 18 October 2013.
Strategic Growth Options Interim SA
The Interim SA Report was produced with the intention of informing the Strategic Growth Options consultation and subsequent preparation of the Draft Proposed Submission Plan.
The Interim SA was available for public comment for six weeks from 9 January to 20 February 2015.
Draft Local Plan Interim SA
The interim SA Report was produced with the intention of informing the Draft Local Plan consultation (Reg 18) and subsequent preparation of the Draft Proposed Submission Plan (Reg 19).
The Interim SA was available for public comment for six weeks from 10 February to 23 March 2016.

Draft Local Plan Preferred Site Options Interim SA
The Interim SA Report was produced with the intention of informing the Draft Local Plan Preferred Site Allocations (Reg 18) and subsequent preparation of the Draft Proposed Submission Plan.
The Interim SA was available for public comment for six weeks from 29 January to 12 March 2018.
Previous SA Work
2007 Scoping Report and SEA
A draft Scoping Report was prepared in June 2007 and finalised in August 2007. The Scoping Report follows from work undertaken on identifying other relevant plans and programmes, sustainability objectives and issues; baseline information and the development of the SA Framework. A revised Sustainability Appraisal: Scoping Report was published September 2009.
The Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Directive aims to ensure that environmental impacts of certain plans and programmes are recognised and assessed before plans are implemented. The SEA Directive requires all local authorities to collect and maintain an environmental baseline dataset. For Brentwood, this is set out in the SEA Baseline Information Profile 2006-2007.
Core Strategy Issues and Options SA
Gypsies and Travellers DPD SA
The Scoping Report informed preparation of the first Gypsies and Travellers DPD Issues and Options consultation. An Interim Sustainability Appraisal Report was prepared as part of consultation on suggested site options at the second Issues and Options stage in June 2008.
The Final SA Report for the Pre-Submission Draft Plan consultation was published December 2009.
