Garden Waste & Recycling

Request

I am the Waste Performance Officer for Wirral Council and I am undertaking research into Councils that offer a Garden Waste Collection subscription service and/or a Compost Give-Away Scheme.

I wonder if you would be able to answer the following questions:

1. Can you provide the number of Garden Waste Collection subscribers you hold to date?
2. Does Brentwood council hold a Compost Give-Away Scheme?
3. If so, how many residents have taken up the scheme?
4. Is the compost scheme limited to those residents/households that have subscribed to the Garden Waste Collection Service or is it open to all residents/households?
5. Do you provide residents with a compost bin, bag etc ?
6. Do you offer residents a compost bin at a reduced price?

I would be grateful for a response and any other information you may be able to provide to assist with my research.

Response

Freedom of Information Request ref 9871

1. Can you provide the number of Garden Waste Collection subscribers you hold to date? There are 4107 Contracts and 4442 bins hired (some residents lease more than one bin on their contract)
2. Does Brentwood council hold a Compost Give-Away Scheme? No
3. If so, how many residents have taken up the scheme? Not applicable
4. Is the compost scheme limited to those residents/households that have subscribed to the Garden Waste Collection Service or is it open to all residents/households? Not applicable
5. Do you provide residents with a compost bin, bag etc ? For Garden waste the current situation is that all residents (in street level properties) are issued with 10 garden waste sacks a further token in their calendar for a further 10 sacks annually and this service is funded through the local Council Tax, the Council chooses to charge for additional services on the basis that the free issue of sacks satisfy the majority of residents requirements and wishes to avoid all residents subsidizing heavy users through their Council tax (i.e. residents in flats would have no need in most cases for this service) Further garden waste bags can be purchased for £2.60 (roll of 10 bags) or alternatively for keen gardeners residents have the opportunity to lease a brown wheeley bin for £41 pa which includes disposal costs – the garden waste collection service is operated fortnightly.
Do you offer residents a compost bin at a reduced price? Not applicable
