Staffing During Bad Weather

Request

- Do you have a policy outlining to staff what efforts they are expected to make to reach their place of work during bad weather, particularly snow?

- What is that policy?

- If staff are unable to get to work due to bad weather, how do you allocate their absence for that day? For example, is it listed as sickness, or do you make them take the day from their annual leave allocation?

Response

Yes

- What is that policy?
Included with in our Time off and Leave Policy.
Weather Conditions – Severe

Where severe weather conditions prevail – for example, snow or flooding - employees are expected to make every effort to attend work, using alternative modes of transport where possible. Where an employee, as a result of using an alternative form of transport (or where there are severe traffic/weather conditions using their normal mode of transport), arrives at work late and/or has to leave work early, they will be credited with a standard working day. Employees who are genuinely unable to attend work should where possible and with the agreement of their line manager work from home.

In exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the Head of Service/Line manager.

- If staff are unable to get to work due to bad weather, how do you allocate their absence for that day? For example, is it listed as sickness, or do you make them take the day from their annual leave allocation?
Paid (See above) It is really in addition to any annual leave and with Flexible working practices many staff can now work from home.
