Parish Burials

Request

I am writing under the Freedom of Information Act to ask for the following information:

1) Number of “paupers funerals” carried out by the council in 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013 and 2013 to date.

2) In each case: the gender and age of the deceased.

3) The total cost to the council, in each year, to fund paupers funerals.

4) What these costs cover: ie coffin, use of funeral director, crematorium charge, burial plot, etc.

- The Council does not keep record of attendees at funerals/burials.

- When a Council funeral involves a burial the deceased is buried in an unmarked grave unless there is a specific mention of a headstone in the deceased’s will and there are sufficient funds in the estate to provide such a memorial.

- If the deceased is cremated then the ashes are buried in an ashes plot in either London Road Cemetery or London Road Cemetery, the plot is allocated by Brentwood Borough Council.

- The Council does not currently have a policy on Public Health Funerals.
